I host a huge cookie exchange every year, and one year, somebody brought pretzels packaged in zip loc bags. It was a bit unusual since most guests actually bake cookies that are elaborately packaged. My teenage boys thought it was hilarious that someone put pretzels in a zip loc bag instead of baking cookies. Their laughter was silenced when they tasted the pretzels because it was obvious these were not ordinary pretzels, they were special pretzels with special seasoning. One of my "cookie exchange rules" is you must bring your recipe, and it appeared my pretzel guest didn't follow that rule either. Later that evening, as we were cleaning up, we found it...1 copy of the pretzel recipe. We now refer to these pretzels as "Special Pretzels", and they're our "go-to" recipe for a quick tailgate snack or party snack. They may look like ordinary pretzels, but your taste buds will happily know the difference. I suppose we'll never know who brought those pretzels, but we're thankful for a new favorite!
- 1 pound bag of pretzels (we prefer waffle pretzels or mini-twists, but any type will work)
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon dill
- 3 oz. Orville Redenbacher's Popcorn Oil (most grocery stores sell this in the popcorn aisle)
- Mix together the garlic powder, cayenne pepper, dll and popcorn oil in a large bowl with a lid.
- Add the pretzels and stir until coated.
- Put the lid on the bowl and let sit 24 hours, stirring a couple of times.
- Something "magical" happens during this 24 hour period, and the result is Special Pretzels.
